It is late May, 1453. Constantinople, the capital of the Byzantine Empire, is enduring its gravest challenge: a siege by an overwhelmingly numerous Ottoman Turk army. The Christian bulwark of the east is teetering under the pressure of relentless attack. The last, great assault is about to begin.
Fall of Constantinople is a solitaire game about the climactic battle, following weeks of assaults and bombardments, that occurred during the great siege of 1453. The gamer commands the Ottomans, while the game system controls the Christian defenders. Each game turn represents several hours of fighting, and game units represent a variable number of troops. Fall of Constantinople comes with a 8.5" x 11" cardstock map (which depicts the city and the surrounding area at a scale of about one and a half miles per inch), 124 colorful light cardstock counters (depicting Janissaries, Anatolians, Europeans, Bashi-bazouks, Greeks, Venetians, Genoese, and other Christian units, leaders, fleets, and Urban's great cannon), game charts, and full rules. Game mechanics are simple, allowing players to get into the game quickly and finish it easily in a single gaming session. "Chrome" is provided through various optional rules. Can you, as Mohammed II lead your troops to victory over the heroic Christian defenders under Constantine XI and Giustiniani? Play Fall of Constantinople and find out!
The other issue game is Jellicoe vs. Scheer, a two-player game of naval combat in the North Sea, 1914- 1918. Expanding upon the Dogger Bank game system contained in Panzaerschreck #5, this game includes 100 2.5"x 5/8th inch cardstock scale ships, charts, and complete rules of play. Gamers will be able to recreate any North Sea naval engagement of the Great War using the nine scenarios included with this game.
Each ship counter represents one capital ship, and the scale of the game is one inch equals 1000 yards. Game mechanics are simple, and play is fast in this "boardgame without a board" miniatures style game.
Scenarios provided include Jutland, several hypothetical scenarios, and Last Sortie of the German Fleet, a "what if" game based on a last chance German sortie in 1918. All capital ships of the era are provided, with ratings for fore, aft, and broadside firing, armor, movement, tonnage, year launched information conveniently contained on each counter. Not designed to be the "last word" in World War I naval simulation, Jellicoe vs. Scheer is intended to ba a fun, accessible "first word" on the subject.
'Nam Diary is this issue's Mini-Sim. As with all Mini-Sims, components are contained within the magazine's pages, and must be copied and separated before play. 'Nam Diary is a very simple, two-player game recreating a 1968 Vietnam firefight between US soldiers and NVA troops. It contains rules, 61 counters, and a 5"x8" map.
